Sodium bromide (NaBr) is an important inorganic bromide widely used in core industrial fields such as petroleum drilling, pharmaceuticals, photosensitive materials, organic synthesis, and water treatment due to its high solubility, high density, and stable bromine source characteristics

1、 Oil and gas industry (primary use)
Used for preparing high-density completion fluids, workover fluids, and drilling fluids, especially suitable for high-pressure, deep well, and complex formation oil and gas extraction.
Core function: Utilizing the high-density characteristics of sodium bromide aqueous solution, balancing downhole formation pressure, preventing blowouts and wellbore collapse, and protecting oil and gas reservoirs.
Advantages: Compared to other salts, sodium bromide solution has low corrosiveness, minimal damage to oil and gas reservoirs, and good compatibility. It can be compounded with calcium chloride, calcium bromide, and other compounds to meet different density requirements.
2、 Medical field
Traditional medicine: used as a sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant to block the central nervous system, used for neurasthenia, insomnia, epilepsy, etc. (now rarely used in modern clinical practice, mostly for animal use).
Pharmaceutical intermediates: key bromine source materials for synthesizing various drugs such as sedatives, anesthetics, antidepressants, diuretics, etc.
Veterinary drugs: widely used in animal sedation, anti stress, and anticonvulsant preparations.
3、 Photosensitive material industry
Preparation of silver halide emulsion: reacts with silver nitrate to produce silver bromide (AgBr), which is the core photosensitive material for traditional black and white film, photographic paper, and printing plate making.
Application: Used for film, X-ray, industrial inspection film, etc. Although digital imaging is popular, there is still demand in the fields of special film, art photography, and cultural relic reproduction.
4、 Organic Synthesis and Chemical Engineering
Bromide reagents/bromine sources: Used in combination with oxidants (hydrogen peroxide, chlorine gas) or acids to generate bromine in situ for the synthesis of bromoalkanes, bromoaromatics, and pharmaceutical/pesticide intermediates.
Nucleophilic reagents: Participate in the Finkelstein reaction to prepare brominated hydrocarbons such as bromomethane and bromobutane.
Fragrance synthesis: Production of fragrance intermediates such as β - phenylethanol.
Dyes and flame retardants: key raw materials for synthesizing bromine containing dyes and bromine based flame retardants.
Electroplating additive: used as a chromium plating catalyst to enhance the gloss, hardness, and efficiency of the coating.
5、 Water treatment and disinfection
Sterilization and algae killing: combined with chlorine, used in swimming pools SPA、 Industrial circulating water oxidizes to produce bromine, which has long-lasting sterilization and algae removal effects and a wider pH range.
Pulp Deinking: In conjunction with sodium hypochlorite, it enhances the efficiency of waste paper deinking and improves pulp whiteness.
6、 Other important applications
Analytical Chemistry: Used as an analytical reagent to determine metal ions such as silver, cadmium, bismuth, selenium, etc.
Special glass: adjusts the refractive index of glass, controls bubbles, and is used in optical glass manufacturing.
Laboratory reagents: Prepare sodium bromide standard solution and buffer solution for chemical and biological experiments.
