What are the applications of sodium fluoroaluminate in the glass industry
Sodium fluoroaluminate (Na3-AlF ₆), commonly known as cryolite, is a key multifunctional additive in the glass industry. It is mainly used as a flux, emulsifier, clarifying agent, and decolorizing agent, and is widely used in the production of various types of glass and special glass.
1、 Core role and application
1. Efficient flux (reduces energy consumption)
Mechanism of action: The main component fluoride ions can break the silicon oxygen bonds of silicates (the main raw material for glass), significantly reducing the melting temperature and viscosity of the glass liquid.
Benefit: It enables more complete melting of raw materials, accelerates homogenization, significantly saves fuel energy consumption, and improves the service life and production efficiency of kilns.
2. Turbidity agent (manufacturing milky white glass)
Mechanism of action: During the cooling process of glass, tiny crystal phases such as NaF and AlF are precipitated, uniformly dispersed, and scatter light.
Application: Production of milky white glass, frosted glass, lighting glass, daily white porcelain glass, etc., achieving a semi transparent or opaque milky white appearance.
3. Clarifier (enhances transparency)
Mechanism of action: Reduce the surface tension of the glass liquid, promote the rapid floating and discharge of small bubbles; Simultaneously react with impurities in the raw materials to purify the glass liquid.
Effect: Producing high transparency optical glass, container glass, and flat glass, reducing defects such as bubbles and stones.
4. Discolorant/Clarifier (improves color)
Mechanism of action: Fluoride ions combine with common iron ions (Fe ² ⁺/Fe ³ ⁺) in glass raw materials to form colorless complexes, preventing their coloration.
Effect: Effectively removes the yellow green color tone caused by iron impurities in glass raw materials, making the glass clearer and whiter.
5. Performance improvers (enhancing quality)
Chemical stability: Enhance the water resistance, acid resistance, and alkali corrosion resistance of glass.
Mechanical performance: increases glass hardness, wear resistance, and surface glossiness, commonly used in tempered glass and wear-resistant glass.
Optical applications: Used for optical glass, anti reflective coatings, improving refractive index and transmittance.
2、 Mainly used in glass category
Daily glass: milky white glass tableware, lampshades, cosmetic bottles, etc.
Architectural Glass: Flat Glass, Tempered Glass, Low-E Glass.
Optical glass: microscopes, camera lenses, eyeglass lenses.
Special glass: glass fiber, glass for electronic industry, glass ceramics.
