It is mainly used in spectral analysis, spot analysis for copper and silver determination, polarographic analysis for indium, cadmium and arsenic, as a developer, and in pesticide analysis.

In the photosensitive material industry, it is used to manufacture photographic films, developers, film intensifiers, toners and color photo bleaches; in medicine, it is used as a nerve sedative (tribromide tablets); it is also used as a chemical analysis reagent, for the transmission of spectroscopy and infrared rays, in the production of special soaps, as well as in engraving, lithography, etc.
